What Is Nicotine?
Nicotine occurs naturally in tobacco and does not cause cancer, but it does keep many people addicted to smoking. Nicotine in cigarettes can be very addictive. Each puff of a cigarette delivers a concentrated dose of nicotine straight to the brain and reinforces the need for the next puff. A cigarette contains more than 4,000 chemicals added in the process of tobacco farming and cigarette production. Of these thousands of chemicals, over 60 of them are known to cause cancer.
How Long Does Nicotine Stay In The System?
Nicotine is a short-acting drug that is eliminated from the body relatively quickly (i.e., within a day or so). However, the effects of acute nicotine withdrawal can be felt for as much as two weeks or more. In addition, the byproducts of nicotine can be detected in the blood for up to a month after you stop smoking.
